Episode transcript

Juliana: As a parent, you may have a lot of questions about special education, especially when the term IEP comes up. And you're not alone.

Millions of kids have Individualized Education Programs to help them catch up with their classmates. Schools have a wide array of tools to help meet kids' academic and behavioral needs. But understanding what all goes into developing and updating an IEP can be a lot for any parent.

So, whether you're brand new to IEPs or have a child who already has one, you may be wondering, how can I make the most of this school support?

On this season of "Understood Explains," we're covering the ins and outs of IEPs.

My name is Juliana Urtubey. I'm a special educator, and I've spent over 12 years helping parents and guardians develop IEPs and monitor their child's progress. I'm also proud to say that I'm the 2021 National Teacher of the Year, and I'll be your guide this season, which is available in English y en español.

We'll start with the basic questions, like "What's the purpose of an IEP?" And then we'll move into specifics, like "How can IEPs help with behavior as well as academics?" And what to do if you disagree with the school.

This show is for all kinds of parents. Whether your child has had an IEP for a while, or if you're just starting to wonder if something might be going on, like maybe ADHD or dyslexia.

We have info for parents of younger kids and older kids and kids who are learning English as an additional language. So, if you want to learn more about IEPs and how they can help kids thrive, I hope you'll join me this season for "Understood Explains."
